This post will deal mostly with engagement rings, but if you're looking for a different type of jewelry these rules still apply.

We get it, from the outside looking in... it's hard to know what's real, why things are priced the way they are, how some online or foreign jewelry businesses can charge what feels like pennies while others are asking for your entire life savings for what SEEMS like the exact same ring...

Growing up I (Robbie) would get guys asking me for advice all the time on how to save money on their rings but still get the same high quality that they're looking for. If anyone could answer this question... it should be a guy who grew up in the jewelry industry right?

Actually... yes! So here, i'm going to let you in on some secrets that most people are totally unaware of when they buy their engagement ring. Things that, when most guys hear them, make them go "AH I WISH I KNEW THAT BEFORE BUYING MY RING!" because the ring their now fiance or wife is wearing... could honestly have been a lot nicer.

So let's talk about some of the things you can do to save money on your engagement ring (or almost any custom piece for that matter), and why this helps you to save money.

1. Your Jewelry Could Be Free!

Did you know that there's a way to get an engagement ring without paying any money? And no you don't have to rob a jewelry store.

We're talking about bringing your materials to the table and/or redesigning an old piece.

This is when you have old jewelry that you don't wear, such as a gold chain, earrings or something that has been passed down to you but it's not your style. When you have jewelry that you can bring to the table, we can actually use the materials from those pieces to save money on material expenses on our end! Let's look at these two options that may be available to you!

We can do this in 2 ways: Way 1 is we take the value of the gold and stones and factor that into the cost of your build. Sometimes people have way more jewelry than they realize, or someone in their family does, and this more than exceeds the entire cost of their custom build! In that case, with no money being exchanged, you can have a brand new perfect beautiful ring.

Way 2 is to redesign an old piece. If you have a piece that has sentimental value to you, such as a grandmothers earrings or necklace or even engagement ring, and you'd like to use that exact material in the process of creating your new ring - so your new engagement ring is actually made from the same gold that your grandma wore - then we can do that as well. In that case, unless there is excess material that we keep, there will still be a cost involved BUT it will be greatly reduced and you get to keep the sentimental value of the piece but in a new design.

2. Go Lab Grown!

Have you heard of lab grown diamonds?

In case you haven't, a lab grown diamond is an actual diamond that was made in a lab rather than in the earth. There are a ton of benefits to lab grown diamonds - and we touch on more of them in another blog - but one of the main ones is that lab grown diamonds are less expensive than natural mined diamonds.

For example, a 2 carat NATURAL round center diamond for your engagement ring might normally cost $14,000 while the same diamond, but lab grown, could come out to less than $3000!

And the best part is, it IS a real diamond! Made from the same stuff as the natural ones, just not from many miles underground.

Beyond that, diamonds aren't the only lab grown stone, there are lab grown sapphires and emeralds and you can get a beautiful ring from all lab grown stones which sparkles just as long and brilliantly as the natural counter-part but for 1/4 the price!

Or rather, you can take your budget and treat it like everything is on discount. So what you thought was possible is now only a fraction of what's really possible since you're going lab grown.
